The Alps, Day 3

So here we go. This is day three of my trips to the Alps. And as promised, this time we will leave the treeline behind us and go to high mountains.

For this day we decided to do a tour around the “Nebelhorn”, a mountain next to Oberstdorf. Since we had to rely on  public transportation system that is not that restricted us somewhat in our time plans, our initial plan was to take the cable car up to the mountain and then do a tour up there. Before we started we did some shopping in Oberstdorf where we asked the local shopkeeper for advice. He told us to better not take the train because of the long waiting times but to just walk up the mountain and then do our tour. So we decided for that and started our climb.

In the first  stage of the way up we walked through a pretty forest with a creek and waterfalls running along the way. After some time we got to the middle train station where we left the forest and then walked on an asphalt street in direction of the peak. Unfortunately, the street went on the whole way to the next train station and just got steeper and steeper. When we reached the next station we were really exhausted and, funnily enough, up there a sign said that you should not go down by foot because the way is so steep. Why was no such sign on the other side?

After a lunch break and some time to recover from the last exercise we began the last stage up to the peak. The way was quite nice because it was not an asphalt street anymore but a hiking path over the ridge of the mountain. So we finally arrived at the peak at over 2200 m only to meet a lot of people that took the easy way up by taking the cable car. But apart from all the sweat and hard times we had the good feeling that we climbed the mountain the honest way …maybe only a small comfort. DSCF3104DSCF3089-1  DSCF3105-1 DSCF3106-1 DSCF3112 As it already was afternoon we decided to only do a short walk back to the next station below and then take the cable car down. After all, we climbed up from ~800 to 2200 m on this day, so for the next day we decided to take it a bit easier…DSCF3123

The Alps, Day 2

So here comes the second day of my vacation in the Alps. While I did the first hiking trip on my own, a friend of mine joined me more or less spontaneously and we spent the rest of the vacation together. Unfortunately, I was a bit handicapped on this day, because my walking boots were still wet from the last day’s heavy rain. So we came up with a tour that did not involve to much hiking or climbing.

As on the first day we started directly from our guest houses. We then went through the next villages where we met curious goats and also beautiful landscapes. After several hours of walking we arrived at our goal: the “Breitachklamm”, one of the main attractions in this region.

The Breitachklamm is a very deep ravine which the Breitach river has formed. You can go through it on a fixed route including a tunnel and several bottlenecks where you better should keep your head down. A sign told us that there was a collapse in 1995 which blocked the entire ravine for about a year. When the pressure was too high the barrier broke and rocks and water caused high damage in the underlying ravine.

After we had exited the Breitachklamm and were on our way back to the entry it started to rain again. We made it to the bus stop more or less without getting wet, but for the rest of the day it would not stop raining. So we took the bus to Oberstdorf, drank some coffee, planned the route for the next day, and then finished our program for that day.

In the next part of this series you finally will see some high mountains action (or pictures, actually), so stay tuned!

The Alps, Day 1

This summer I went to the Alps for vacation! I spent about a week in the region of Oberstdorf in the most southern area of Germany to do some hiking trips. Apart from taking some great tours I also took the opportunity to try out my camera even more. So in the next days or weeks I plan to publish some of the photos. Here follows the first part.

DSCF2871On my first trip I just started by foot and went to the next mountains, “Weiherkopf” and “Großer Ochsenkopf”. On my way up I met a lot of cows that not only stood on fields but just on the path and even on the peak of the mountain. But from up there I had a nice view over the valley.

DSCF2938Unfortunately, on my way back the weather changed and soon it began to rain heavily. I got soaking wet while walking and running back and at the moment I was back at the guesthouse the rain stopped …of course.

After I put on dry cloth I went out for another walk around the village to take some more pictures of mountains …and that horse.
